Climate Finder: find places based on temperature and other data

What is the nearest country that has an average of 20 degrees Celsius in the Winter months? How about cities with good air quality in Summer, a specific humidity, cities in Asia that are mild to warm all year round, or cities that are warm, have comfortable humidity and clean air in Summer?

While it is possible to open weather sites and look at historical data for certain places or countries, the data is usually limited to one specific place or country.

Climate Finder is a service that attempts to change that. The idea behind the service is simple but interesting: search for certain metrics that you can combine across the entire world using historical weather information.

Just open the site to get started. There you find listed the selection options at the top. Pick a criteria -- temperature, humidity, rain, air quality or the service's Nomad count -- a time period -- month or Summer/Winter/All Year -- and enter minimum and maximum values. You may search worldwide or limit searches to specific continents. You can leave the minimum or maximum field empty as well, e.g, to find all places with at least 16 degrees Celsius.

You may combine filters, e.g. temperature of at least 20 degrees Celsius and less than 20mm rain per month. Options to switch from Celsius to Fahrenheit and to change the currency (does not appear to be used by Climate Finder) are provided.

Climate finder lists up to 100 cities that match the selected climate criteria. What is great about the listing is that you get all climate criteria displayed for the entire year (averages) so that you can check quickly if another month may be more appropriate for a stay.

The data is color coded to help users further. Air quality ranges from green (clean) to red (bad) and the other climate criteria use a similar system as visual indicators.

Closing Words

Climate Finder is a useful service for travelers and especially for planning vacation trips as it provides you with a list of target locations based on climate criteria that you enter.

I wish that it would provide additional options, e.g. let you specify a starting location in the world and limit results based on distance, or to include parameters such as proximity to the sea or ocean, or snow precipitation.

All in all though, it is an excellent starting point if you want to research vacation locations based on region and climate criteria.
