Minecraft has in-game maps that users can create so that it’s easier to keep track of where they’re going. A map, coupled with the location coordinates, guarantees that you will never get lost, or you’ll never get too lost to find your way home.

Maps are easy to craft; you might have to dig a little to find the Redstone for a map with location markers but if you don’t need the location markers, paper is really all you need.

Name maps in Minecraft

Maps in Minecraft can be created with nine pieces of paper (paper is crafted from sugarcane which can be found growing near water), and a crafting table. If you want location markers, and you have a compass to create it, replace the paper in the middle of the 3×3 crafting table grid with the compass.

Maps, for a given location, have the same name. For maps created for different locations, the maps will be differentiated by a number.

The map names in Minecraft aren’t friendly and if you create maps using only the crafting table, you won’t be able to change their names.

Name a map in Minecraft

Naming a map in Minecraft is easy but you can’t do it with a simple crafting table. Instead, you need to craft a cartography table, and then use it to change the name of a map.

Create cartography table in Minecraft

You need;

  • Two pieces of paper
  • Four wood planks (any type of wood will work).

To craft the cartography table;

  1. Open the crafting table.
  2. Place the papers in the first two cells of the first row.
  3. Place the four planks of wood, one in each cell, below the paper so that they occupy the first two cells of rows two and three.
  4. Take the cartography table.

Now that you have a cartography table, you can give your maps a user-friendly name.

  1. Place the cartography table on a solid block.
  2. Click it.
  3. Place the map you want to name in the first cell.
  4. At the top, you will see a field for the name.
  5. Click inside the name field and enter a name.

  1. Retrieve the map from the crafted cell and move it to your inventory.
  2. Hover the mouse over the map to view its name.

Conclusion

A map can be named and renamed anytime you want. You will need a cartography table to do the job but it’s easy to craft so there’s nothing stopping you from naming and renaming a map as often as you need to.
